Fitchburg – Michael J. Tuunanen, 65, of Fitchburg, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 5, 2017 at his home following prolonged illness.

Mike was born to the late Toivo F. Tuunanen and Frances S. (Yeaman) Tuunanen on June 2, 1951 and lived his life in the Fitchburg area. Mike attended Fitchburg High School where he excelled in academics and athletics, most notably on the school’s basketball team. He later attended Mount Wachusett Community College earning the coveted President’s Key and later matriculated at Amherst College graduating in 1974.

Mike resided in town and worked in various trades locally. Though he was fan of the greater-area professional sports teams, he was also a regular patron of the public library where he found refuge in the pages of their many literary works. As a purveyor of knowledge, Mike was a force to be reckoned with in a trivia challenge in addition to quietly being a critic to the status quo.

He is survived by his son, Nathan Tuunanen of Florida, a brother, John Tuunanen and wife Sandy of Leominster as well as several nephews and nieces.

At the request of Mike and his family final arrangements will be private.

My condolences to the family of Mike. Mike was one of my best friends in the early years of our lives ( 2-6 grades). I spent a lot of after school afternoons at his home on the 3rd floor on Marshall St. He was a good friend. His Mom was great. She worked hard at the cafeteria at B.F. Brown and kept things together which I realized later on in life. I am saddened by Mike's passing and wish I could have spent some time with him later in life. He has my admiration and respect. And I give my sympathy to his family. Doug Smith
