LEOMINSTER – Anthony ’Tony’ DeRienzo, 82, passed away Sunday December 31, at UMASS Memorial Hospital, Worcester, the result of a heart attack he experienced on December 25. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Tony was born on April 8, 1935, the son of Frank & Cesira DeRienzo. He grew up in East Boston, one of 12 children. He learned many trades, some of which were carpentry and plumbing working with his father at a very young age. Tony was a man of many talents, and was often called upon to handle repairs for friends & neighbors.

He moved to Hickory Hills Lunenburg in 1963 with his wife and two sons. His work history included employment at Foster Grant Plastic, Leominster, Fitchburg Foundry, and former owner of the Paddock Lounge, Fitchburg, from 1969-1971. More recently Tony has been in charge of maintenance at Applewood Condo Assoc, Leominster for nearly 25 yrs, and was the friend of many residents.

His hobby was horse racing. He once said if he had studied as well in school as his did the horse racing sheet he would have been a scholar.

He leaves his two sons. Frank S. DeRienzo and wife, Kristen of Richmond Hill, GA and their children, Luke, Amara, Julia & Eliza. His son Gary M. DeRienzo of Lunenburg, his former spouse, Sandra L. DeRienzo of Leominster. His brother Victor DeRienzo and wife Terry of Jacksonville, FL., sisters, Anna Redmond of Stoneham, Lena Zagarella of Natick, Netta DeWart and Lucy DeWart of Saugus, MA.

Tony was predeceased by his grandson Michael A. DeRienzo (Gary’s son), brothers Angelo, Vincent, Richard and Raymond DeRienzo, and sisters Olga Martinec and Betty Cataldo. He will also be missed by his best friend Bob McQuade as well as many others whose life he touched.

Sincere gratitude to the medical staff at UMASS Medical Hospital, Cardiac ICU, Dr Ku, RN’s Ellen, Cindy, Jill, Katina, Eileen, and others. Their care, and compassion for Tony, and consideration for family was exemplary.

Dear Auntie Sandy, Frankie & Gary,
I'm so sorry to hear of Uncle Tony's passing. Please know that my thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I'm sure my mom, as well as Auntie Olga, Uncle Vinnie, Uncle Angelo, Uncle Ritchie and Uncle Raymond welcomed him into heaven with open arms. I hope that knowing they are all together, smiling down at us, brings some comfort to you.

Aunt Sandy, Frank and Gary, Very sorry to hear of your dads passing. One thing came to mind and made me laugh. At my mothers wake I was standing in line and Uncle Tony comes up to me, looks at me from head to toe leaning to one side and says, I quote: Wow,you really are a big bastard! The timing was perfect and I got a good chuckle out of it. The DeRienzo clan is slowly getting back together and grandpa is ready to light the Hickory Hills barbecue with gasoline again! He is in good company.
