Thomas D. Whitney

Thomas Whitney, 82, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on March 10th, 2024. Beloved husband of Marilyn (Marino) Whitney, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage, prior to her passing in 2007.

Born and raised in Leominster, Thomas was the son of Francis and Catherine (Despo) Whitney. After serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Thomas returned to MA, where he married Marilyn in 1968, and later began practicing law. An avid stargazer, Thomas eagerly shared his passion for interstellar study with others in his community. He founded the Amherst Area Amateur Astronomers Association, providing free classes and observational events in the Amherst area for years. The Association continues to this day. He is survived by his son, Jon, and grandson, Raymond; foster son Phuong Palatini and granddaughter Geneva; cousin Ellen Amadon; and friends, Kevin Collins and Brian Walker.

A private burial service will be held. In lieu of flowers or cards, the family requests that donations be made to educational causes or services of one’s choice.
