LEOMINSTER---Charles Edward Herndon, 79 years old of Leominster, passed Saturday, October 7, 2017 surrounded by his family in Sterling Village. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Gladys Marie (Rigsby) Herndon, daughter Tammie R. Herndon and her fiancée Francis Arsenault of Leominster, son Eric J. Herndon and his wife Stacey of Nicholsonville, Kentucky, brothers Frank Herndon of Leominster, Roger Herndon and his wife Nellie of Virginia, Kenneth Herndon and his wife Fayetta of English West Virginia, sisters Linda Reeves of Virginia, and Brenda Olsen of Schulenburg, Texas, sisters-in-law Peggie Herndon of Leominster, and Sue Herndon of Louisiana, grandchildren Kaylee Herndon, Riley Herndon and Bailey Herndon of Kentucky, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers James (Bill) Herndon, George Herndon and Glen Herndon and sister-in-law Charlotte (Sue) Herndon.
Charles was born December 19, 1937 in Stonega, Virginia, son of Shuler and Buena (Kelly) Herndon. He grew up in Berwind, West Virginia and graduated from Big Creek High School in 1956, and had lived in Leominster for the past 56 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had worked in Purchasing and Logistics at the Foster Grant Company for many years and also at Modern Dispersions as Director of Purchasing in Leominster, where he retired in 2007. Charles was a member of the First Baptist Church in Leominster, Leominster Sportsmen’s Association and the Wachusett Mountain Men Club. Charles mostly loved spending time with his family and friends. He was passionate about wildlife, nature and music. Enjoyed rides to Maine for a bowl of lobster chowder. He was an avid Red Sox, Patriots, and Boston Bruins fan for years. He loved telling stories of his childhood to family and friends. He often referred to West Virginia like living on Walton's mountain. He loved to see others smile and laugh. His greatest joys are his grandchildren and family.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 13th at 12 noon in the First Baptist Church of Leominster, 23 West Street, Leominster. Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice in his name. The Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West Street, Leominster is assisting the family with arrangements.
