Richard Mullaney Obituary

LEOMINSTER---Richard J. “Dick” Mullaney, 87, of Leominster, passed away on October 9, 2018, his late wife’s birthday, surrounded by his loving children.

Dick was born in Leominster on January 10, 1931, a son of the late James T. Sr. and Mary E. (Muldoon) Mullaney. He was a 1948 graduate of Leominster High School. Dick attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy and served as an Airman, Aerographer’s Mate Striker in the United States Navy. He was later enrolled in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps unit at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.

Dick worked for San-Vel Concrete Corp. in Littleton for over 20 years and was its vice president of sales when he left to found Richard J. Mullaney Transportation, an aggregate sales and trucking company, which he operated in Leominster for nearly 30 years.

Dick was a lifelong communicant of Saint Leo’s Parish, where he served for decades as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and as a member of the finance committee. He was also a life member of the Leominster Lodge of Elks where he served as a past exalted ruler. Dick dedicated his life to being a provider for his family. He was a straight shooter who called things as he saw them, as well as a storyteller who enjoyed using his Irish wit in exchanging barbs with willing and unwitting foils.

Dick leaves his four children, all of Leominster: daughter Joan E. Hodskins and husband Roger A., and their children, Paul M. and wife Katherine J., Peter A., and Kathryn E.; son David R. Mullaney and wife Brenda M., and their children, Ryan J., Kaela W., Joseph R. and Sean R.; son Michael J. Mullaney and former wife Christine L., and their children Adam R. and Patrick J.; son Stephen J. Mullaney, his caregiver with whom he had lived; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Assunta R. “Sue” (Simeoni), in 2007; granddaughter Angela M. Mullaney in 2001; sister Mary E. “Betty” Carter in 2011; and brother James T. Mullaney, Jr. in 1986.

Dick’s funeral will be held from the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West Street, Leominster with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Leo’s Church, 128 Main St., Leominster at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery, 360 Lancaster St., Leominster. Calling hours will be held in the funeral home on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
