Robert B. Mackey passed away after a lengthy illness on June 13, 2018 at Lowell General Hospital. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on June 28, 1939 to Frank Bernard Mackey and Nancy Mackey (Seppala), he grew up in Fitchburg, and more recently resided in Dracut.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years Judith Roark Mackey, his two children Robin Fortunato and Scott Mackey, and 2 grandchildren Rachel and Sam Smith, all who reside in Rhode Island. He is also survived by his two brothers-in-law John Roark of Burke, Virginia and William H. Roark of Andover, Massachusetts, whom Bob often referred to as his “wingman.”

Raised in Fitchburg in old-world Finnish traditions by aging, immigrant grandparents, his äiti ja isä (mother and father in Finnish) created a safe and traditional upbringing for Bob. Bilingual, Bob was an American Finn who could perfectly intonate the true Finnish pronunciation of words as if he was a native of Finland. He was proud of his Finnish roots in Fitchburg, Massachusetts and grateful for the many family members who helped his grandparents raise him.

Bob Mackey passed away as he lived, positive and grateful for a full and happy life, despite several recent health challenges. He was a business owner in Chelmsford, MA and later a technical support engineer at Agfa Compugraphic in Wilmington.

Bob enjoyed many interests: he was a skilled sailor, alpine and water skier, bird hunter, and avid historian of World War II battles and the heroes who fought them. Bob enjoyed travel and had visited several World War II D-day beaches including Omaha, Sword and Juno, as well as the American Cemetery at Normandy.

As a youth, Bob developed a keen interest in vintage watches and clocks. He acquired a prolific knowledge and, what started as a hobby, turned into a business. Bob was a member of NAWC (National Association of Watch Collectors) and maintained a vast reference library, becoming a valuable consultant for many watch dealers and collectors across the country who relied on his expertise.

Bob had a special gift for connecting with people from all walks of life, guided by respect, sincere interest and a joyful, selfness nature. He will always be remembered for making others feel valued, bringing sunshine and warmth to those he engaged with everywhere he went.

Robert Mackey will be greatly missed by his family and friends and the many people who were blessed to have known him.

An Ecumenical Burial Service on Saturday, June 16th at Forest Hill Cemetery, 115 Mt. Elam Road, Fitchburg will be offered at 10 am. Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 15th from 4-7 pm in the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West Street, Leominster.
