Dennis P. Grammont, 78, of Leominster, passed away July 1, 2025, surrounded by his wife and family following a decline in health due to the effects of Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War. He was the son of Paul and Irene (Peters) and lived in Leominster for most of his life, graduating from Leominster High School, Class of 1965.
Dennis proudly served his country as Sergeant for the U.S. Marines in the Vietnam War. For his service, he was recognized with a National Defense Service Medal, two Vietnam Service Medals, and several commendations.
Following his military career, Dennis worked as Printer for Quad/Graphics (Eusey Press) in Leominster. It was during his work at Quad/Graphics he learned the art of graphic design and printing. Following retirement, Dennis served as a Train Engineer on the Explorer Express Train at the Ecotarium, a job he loved and experienced much joy seeing the smiling faces of the children. In fact, children would often request “Engineer Dennis” to take them on the train rides. He also worked every Election Day in Leominster, serving as the Warden in Ward 1.
Dennis and his wife, Phyllis, loved to travel and visited Myrtle Beach every September for years, as well as enjoyed trips to Paris, annual Jeep Jamborees around the country, and winters spent with friends and his brother at The Villages in Florida. The couple also made trips to Newfoundland, Canada, to visit Phyllis’ family. During these trips, he took rides in a cousin’s wooden car, hiked, drank homemade wine, checked out the glaciers and found new things to explore. His favorite trip was driving across the country in 2018 where he visited many National Parks, drove on Route 66 and “stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona,” while visiting his Marines brothers along the way in Ohio and Georgia.
With his family, he enjoyed many Fathers’ Day BBQs as well as trips to Tun Tavern in Philadelphia and other Marines landmarks with his sons. He was proud to walk his daughter down the aisle as father of the bride, cheered on his grandchildren during their many sporting events, and attended Broadway shows with his granddaughter in New York City.
Dennis and Phyllis married in 1997 during one of their vacations in Myrtle Beach and together built a life that was full of devoted love for each other. It was hard to find a time when they weren’t together! He enjoyed listening to blues music and watching endless episodes of “Star Trek,” or any other show on the Sci-Fi channel. He never turned down a trip to Curtis’ BBQ and The Grafton Inn in Vermont, Red Bones in Somerville, Kane’s Donuts in Saugus, and Kelly’s Roast Beef on Revere Beach.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Phyllis Grammont of Leominster; his sons, Paul Grammont, Steven Grammont, and Damian Grammont and his wife, Lorren; and his daughter, Lauren Howe and her husband, Jeffrey. Dennis also leaves behind his grandchildren, Anthony Dimacali, Rachael Grammont, Jacob Grammont, Matthew Grammont, Abigail Grammont, Gracie Petit and Francesca Howe, and his great-grandchildren, Arianna and Maddox. He also leaves his brother, Gary Grammont and his wife, Jill, and his “sis” Francesca Busalacchi. He is pre-deceased by his parents and his brother, Brian Grammont, as well as his canine companions, Muffin and Roxy.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Gyorgy Baffy, Dr. Emily Tsanotel and staff from the VA Medical Center as well as Wendy from Care Central VNA & Hospice, and Pastor Michelle Ashley from the Leominster United Methodist Church for their care and support.
A full military funeral will be held on Thursday, July 10, at 11 a.m., at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. Calling hours are scheduled on Wednesday, July 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home, 106 West Street, Leominster.
As Dennis was a ferocious reader, memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Friends of the Leominster Public Library, 30 West Street, Leominster, MA 01453, or to Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS, 66675.
