LEOMINSTER---Doris Mary (Phelps) Congram, 84 of Leominster, died peacefully on January 1, 2018 at Horizons Living and Rehab Center in Brunswick, Maine with her family by her side. She was born April 11, 1933 in Fitchburg, MA, daughter of the late Harold and Florence (Boland) Phelps. Doris was a graduate of St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg, and a graduate of Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner. Doris was a social worker by profession, employed by the Herbert Lipton Community Center in Leominster for many years. She volunteered many hours in her role as facilitator of the Parents Anonymous Program for 28 years, assisting countless parents and families. Before that, Doris worked for Family Chiropractic, Planned Parenthood, and the Senior Center in Fitchburg. Throughout all her years, Doris was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Doris was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Herbert Francis Congram, Sr. in 2008, and by her infant son, Michael in 1967. She is survived by her six children: Herb Jr. and his wife Zsuzsa Congram of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Stephen and his partner Kathy Powers of Worcester, MA, Ann and her husband Tony D’Alessio of Brunswick, ME, Eileen Manglass of Brunswick, ME, John and his wife Gloria Congram of Leominster, MA, Maureen and her husband Kenny Therrien of Fitchburg, MA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Doris was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Leominster, MA; helping out with the Annual Bazaar, the Holiday Fair, and singing in the choir. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren, attending sporting events, plays and concerts over the years. She was a talented thespian in high school, which is how she met the love of her life, our father. She enjoyed camping and the outdoors, loved to knit and crochet, and loved to travel.
Doris’ family would like to thank the staff at Horizons Living and Rehab Center in Brunswick, Maine, especially the nurses and aids who so lovingly cared for her.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 11 am in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main Street, Leominster. Burial will be at a later date. Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 12th from 5-7 pm in the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West Street, Leominster.
