Leominster - Eddie John Strobel passed away in his home on May 31, 2024. Eddie was born in Fitchburg on May 24, 1928. He was the only son of Eddie and Magdalena (Brosel) Strobel.
Eddie leaves his wife of 49 years, Susan (Scherer) Strobel: his daughter Dale Wheeler and her husband Gus of Georgia; his son Sidney Rafuse and his wife Lisa of Leominster; his Granddaughter Tessa Rafuse and Grandsons Caulin Salvi and Colby Falk of Leominster; and his grandson Bertrand Mejia-Morin of Oregon.
He was of German descent, and a member of the Trinity Congregational Church in Fitchburg until they closed. He graduated from Fitchburg High School in the class of 1946. He was a Veteran and served in the military during the Korean Conflict from 1956 to 1960.
Eddie went to work at age 14 at Doehla Greeting Card Co. in Fitchburg and worked there until he was drafted into the army. After he was discharged from the military he joined three others and ran a small greeting card company which later became George S. Carrington Company where he worked as General Manager for 25 years. When that company closed he got a job with the Eusey Press in Leominster, running the plant and selling commercial printing.
He was a kind and humble man and contributed any of his successes in life to being in the right place at the right time.
Eddie loved sailing and spent many summers and weekends with his wife on Narragansett Bay sailing their sailboat called Sidepocket. After retiring, he purchased a motor home to tour the Country, and spent summers camping in Wells, Maine, and winters in the Florida Keys. He loved the outdoors and hiking with his black lab, Susie. He enjoyed skiing, playing golf, kayaking, and even managed to, on several occasions, complete the 25 mile bike ride for MS.
Mostly he enjoyed his home. Family was important to him and he loved all of the large family gatherings held at the Strobel’s for the holidays.
Eddie and Sue are especially grateful for the constant companionship and joy brought to them by their niece Bonnie and her daughter Charlotte over the past four years. They are also thankful for the wonderful care he received through LandMark Health, Better Care Home Health and Beacon Hospice.
Eddie requested no calling hours. A service to honor his life will be held at the United Methodist Church on 77 Hall St. in Leominster on Tuesday June 11th, at 11:00am. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to North Star Family Services, 758 Main Street, Leominster.
