Edward Johnson Obituary

On April 5, 2021, Edward Reino Johnson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the Life Care Center of Leominster at the age of 80.

After earning his teaching degree from Fitchburg State College, Edward pursued his dream of becoming a Special Needs teacher. He went on to become an extraordinary teacher, beginning his career teaching in Ridgefield, NJ then returning to Massachusetts to teach in Lancaster and spent most of his career teaching Special Needs children at McKay Campus School in Fitchburg where he eventually became Vice Principal. He later became a Special Education Case Manager for the City of Fitchburg.

Edward dedicated many years of service as a member of the Leominster School Committee and served as member of the building committee for Sky View Middle School.

Edward was very proud to have been a member of the 1958 undefeated Leominster High School basketball team. In 2017, he attended a banquet where he received a plaque honoring the team.

Edward will be remembered for his dedication to education, his kindness and compassion, his brilliant mind, his wisdom and his sense of humor.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Phyllis; his daughter, Leslie and son-in-law, Jay Zomlefer; daughter, Kelli and son-in-law Jason Weed; three grandsons, Soren of Madison, WI; Logan of Phoenix, AZ and Thayer of Miami, FL. He also leaves behind his brother, J. Robert Johnson, of Scarborough, ME. His brother, Ralph Johnson predeceased him.

Special thanks to Life Care Center of Leominster for the excellent care he received there and heartfelt thanks to Sarah and the 2E staff at Fitchburg Healthcare for the loving care they provided for him while he was there.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for a memorial bench at Doyle Field in Edward’s honor. Please contact Edward’s grandson, Soren, at sorenaz96@gmail.com for further information about donating.
