Franklin Herndon Obituary

On the morning of Sunday, June 12, 2022, Franklin McArthur Herndon passed away in Worcester, Massachusetts at the age of 80.

Frank is predeceased by his son, Terrence Fulton Herndon, and wife, Charlotte Sue Herndon whom he married in West Virginia in 1962. Frank remained a loving and devoted husband to his soulmate before and after her death in 1998.

Frank is lovingly remembered by his sons, Gerry Wade Herndon and Vincent Allen Herndon, as well as his many grandchildren.

Frank was born in Stonega, Virginia on March 26 of 1942. He graduated from Big Creek High School in War, West Virginia in 1960. He then went on to marry his love and soon after moved to Leominster, Massachusetts where he continued to remain the rest of his life. He raised his three sons in Leominster with his wife and he worked tirelessly without complaint as a facilities maintenance mechanic.

Frank was a man of many passions and talents, including being a history buff, poet, craftsman, banjo player, fisherman, devout patriot, Christian, transcendentalist, and an expert shooter. His crowning achievement was founding the Wachusett Mountainmen, a Leominster Sportsmen's Association Blackpowder Group, with four others in 1978. He was chairman and “mountain king,” but known to his peers as“Wetfoot.” The group has grown to have almost 50 members, and was formed to appreciate and practice pre-Civil War lifestyle, skills, and values including the Blackpowder Shootouts at Wachusett Mountain. Few can claim to grasp as many skills as Frank, a jack of all trades, and truly a master of them all.

A funeral service for frank will be held on Thursday, June 16th, at 11am in First Baptist Church, 23 West St. Leominster, and is open to all who wish to attend. Frank will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, MA, next to his wife and son.
