LEOMINSTER- Herbert E. Claflin of Leominster passed on September 14 at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley.

His spirit has been reunited with his wife Carol J Claflin and brother Malcom and sister-in-law; Doreen Claflin formerly of Rochester NY.

Herb was born in Wellsville NY and grew up in Boliver NY with his parents Dr. Leonard M Claflin and Huldah W. Claflin. He was very active in school, participating in track and field, basketball and as quarterback he led the Bulldog Football team to 4 undefeated seasons. After graduating from Boliver High School in 1952, Herb attended Springfield College graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology ’56 followed by a Master of Education ‘57. It was here that he met his wife of 63 years Carol Jeffers. The two settled in New Britain Ct. where Herb began his banking career at New Britain Bank and Trust as a trust officer and later was promoted to the youngest ever, Bank Vice President. He was active in his community and church and socialized and golfed with many friends and colleagues at The Shuttle Meadow Country Club.

Herb and Carol then moved to Acton Ma. Where they resided for over 35 years. He continued his banking career at Boston Safe and Deposit, then retired from Malden Trust Company (now Eastern Bank) after 25 years of dedicated service as a trust officer. After retiring Herb and Carol moved to Leominster to be closer to their son Craig and wife Carol and their grand-kids, Shelby and Conor.

Throughout Herbs life he enjoyed many hobbies, fishing, gardening, avid Celtics and Patriots fan and could always be found in the kitchen at family events sharing his love for cooking with his son, grandkids and great grandkids. He was a definite “foodie” of all cuisines. Herb was an Integral part of the MacLachlan Scottish Clan, convening the MacLachlan Clan tent at many east coast and New England Highland games and co-hosted, with his wife Carol, the “Highland Fling” dinner at the New Hampshire Highland Games.

Herb is survived by his son Craig W. Claflin and daughter in law Carol Tennant Claflin and proud of his ever-growing family- granddaughter Shelby B. Kay and her husband Matthew Kay; Their children and Herbs great-grandchildren Benjamin and Charlotte Kay and his grandson Conor J. Claflin and fiancé Karla Murillo. Family was Herbs life, spending many days hosting “grammy and grampy camp”, enjoying holiday time with tree cutting and holiday prepping together, attending Scottish highland Games and many years of vacationing at Blue Mountain Lake NY with family.

The family has chosen to honor Herb and his commitment to his Scottish heritage by creating a fund for Highland Games Clan Tent Conveners to support their efforts hosting the clan tents at the highland's games throughout New England, continuing the promotion and love for their Scottish heritage for all generations. Gifts may be made to: Clan MacLachlan Association of North America, 1609 Truscott Court, Roseville, CA 95661, in memo please include Herbert Claflin Conveners Fund.
