Irene Harrington, 77 of Leominster died Saturday, October 4 at Fitchburg Healthcare from complications with pneumonia. She has survived by her husband of 53 years, Chris Harrington.
After Irene received her advanced degree from Salem State College and Arizona State University, she briefly worked at Digital Equipment Corporation in Worcester while fielding teaching opportunities at various colleges in the area. Her big opportunity came with an offer from Becker Junior college in Worcester as an instructor for business education. Irene achieved great respect among her peers in the college administration, she also received awards for excellence and in the teaching profession during her tenure there. Irene greatly enjoyed her work and love the interaction with her students and they all loved her. When her parents fell into declining health, she decided to leave her 10-year career at Becker to take care of her parents.
In her spare time, she took up gardening creating and maintaining many gardens at home that became her life’s joy. She eagerly awaited each Spring to work in her gardens and get to see them once again come to life. She loved the butterflies and hummingbirds that visited her gardens daily and spent many hours outdoors with them. In the winter months, she planned her work for the gardens in the spring and took up sewing and puzzling hobbies during the time she couldn’t garden.
Irene was a very kind and giving person and will be greatly missed by family, friends and all who knew her.
Services will be private.
