J.R. Laughlin, 86, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, in Gardner, Massachusetts. Born on August 20, 1939, in Vinton, Louisiana, he lived a long and hardworking life rooted in devotion to family, faith, and community.
J.R. dedicated nearly five decades of his life to the oilfields of Louisiana and Texas. He began his career as a derrickman and rose through the ranks to become a driller with Brownie Drilling Company and Reliable Oil. His 48 years of service in the industry reflected not only his strong work ethic but also his steadfast commitment to providing for those he loved.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Lucy O'Gea Laughlin; his parents, Mayonce and Estelle Laughlin; two sisters, Willie Mae Bertrand and Viola Wilkerson; and two brothers, Ervin Laughlin and J.C. Laughlin.
J.R.'s legacy lives on through his children: sons Mark A. Laughlin of Sulphur, Louisiana; Brian K. Laughlin of Pisgah, Mississippi; and daughter Brenda R. Sumner of Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren—Christy, Tony, Jessica, Terrance, R.J., Christopher, Brandi, Remy, and Sydney—and was blessed with many great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who cherished him deeply.
Known for his kind and generous spirit, J.R. was a man who held tightly to his faith and found joy in the company of family and friends. His warmth touched many lives across generations.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
