James H. Stith, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, lived a remarkable life. Born on the 26th of December 1943 in the bucolic countryside of Kentucky, Jim’s journey was one of dedication, humor, profound kindness, and just a touch of mischief. It is both with a heavy heart and a celebration of his extraordinary life that we announce his sudden passing on the 26th of April 2024 at the age of 80 in Leominster, Massachusetts.
Jim is survived by his loving family, extended family, and three grandchildren. He shared a life rich in laughter and mutual respect with his beloved wife Arline. Together they raised two sons, Jake and Alec who were imparted with his spirit of integrity and kindness. He welcomed his daughters-in-law Abby and Lori into his house as family and he cherished the time he was able to spend with his three grandchildren Emerson, Avery, and James. He was also the dear brother of Eleanor Friel, whose shared memories are a testament to the unbreakable bonds of family. He was preceded in death by his adopted sister Maryanne Gross.
Jim’s life was one marked by service and excellence. A proud Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served his country with courage, honor, and distinction, most notably during his deployment in Vietnam. His commitment to his fellow servicemen and women continued long after his military career ended, he was active in his local VFW Post and served as its Commander for a term and was instrumental in the creation and dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. His dedication to service was matched only by his skill as a craftsman, a vocation through which he crafted not only objects of beauty and function but also lasting friendships.
Jim’s academic pursuits led him to Harvard University, where he earned a B.A. in Economics. This education laid the foundation for a life filled with intellectual curiosity. He was an avid reader whose interests ran the gamut from existential to world history. He was able to recall facts and anecdotes for any situation he found himself in. He also found an outlet for his problem solving and creative abilities in the world of computer programming.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as intelligent, funny, gentle, and a man of faith. His intelligence shone through in his insightful conversations and quick wit. His sense of humor was a source of joy for all around him, and his gentle nature made him a confidant and friend to many. Jim lived his life with a quiet strength and a kind heart, guiding his family with wisdom and love.
As we remember Jim, we are reminded of the words of John Donne, “Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind”. So too does the passing of our dear Jim, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew him. Yet, we shall not dwell in the shadow of sorrow, for he would have us remember the light of his laughter and the warmth of his wisdom.
As we pay tribute to James H. Stith, we celebrate a life well-lived, a path well-traveled, and a man well-loved. Jim’s story does not end here; it is carried forward in the stories we share, the values we uphold, and the love we continue to give. Rest in eternal glory, until we meet again in New Jerusalem where stories never end.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, May 17th at 11am at Richardson Funeral Home, 106 West St. Leominster. Calling hours begin at 10:30 am.
