James Herbert Herrick, 87, of Leominster, died on March 17, 2023 at Leominster Hospital with his wife by his side hand in hand. Leave it to Jim, who was so proud of his Irish heritage, to pass on St. Patrick’s Day. He was born in Fitchburg on February 7, 1936 to John and Lillian (May) Herrick.
Known as “The Fox”, Jim played professional baseball for the Kansas City Athletics and the San Francisco Giants organizations. He was later drafted into the United States Army and he had previously served as a private in the New Hampshire National Guard.
Besides his love for his wife, children, siblings, friends and . . . of course, baseball . . . the greatest loves of his life were his grandchildren who have brought him the greatest joy for over 17 years.
He leaves his wife, Anita (Svolis) Herrick; his son, James Herrick, Jr.; his daughter, Tara Witzgall (James); his son, Todd Herrick (Michelle); his grandchildren, Tyler Witzgall, Victoria Witzgall, Alexander Herrick and Jack Herrick; his brothers, John, Jr. and Brian (Susan); his sisters, Barbara Beloin, Kathryn and Deborah Christen (Leonard); his sisters-in-law, Cynthia and Kathleen; and his best friend, Rollins Hardwick.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, William, Robert “Mickey” and Thomas and his brother-in-law, Gerald Beloin.
Jim’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Life Care Center of Leominster not only for their excellent care but for the love and compassion that they showed not only to Jim but, also, to his family.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Richardson Funeral Home, 106 West St, Leominster. Services will be private.
