Janice Ogden Obituary

Janice (Price) Ogden, 78, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2017 as she was surrounded by her family.

She leaves her husband of 54 years, John, her children Karen, Diane, and Tom along with their spouses Mark Vella and Laura (Sullivan) Ogden, and three grandchildren: Keenan Vella, Chloe Vella, and Emily Ogden.

Janice was born in August of 1939 to Alice and Roger Price of Langhorne, PA. Janice was the youngest of four: an older brother Roger, sister Gwendolin Price Miller, and her identical twin, Geraldine Price Weisser.

Janice grew up on Richardson Avenue in Langhorne and graduated from Neshaminy High School in 1957. She worked in Philadelphia as a secretary for an insurance firm and met her husband John on the “L” train during their daily commutes to and from the city. For John, it was love at first sight, and he will tell you all about it and show you Janice’s picture which he’s kept in his wallet all these years! They married in February 1963. John’s sales career had them on the move from Pennsylvania to New England, where the family settled in Stow, MA from 1978 to 2004. After that, Janice and John moved to Hudson, and eventually to Leominster, MA.

Janice had many jobs in Massachusetts, ranging from the secretary for the Stow Board of Health, to her most prestigious position as an Executive Secretary at Digital Equipment Corporation. She took great pride in her work and made many lasting friendships.

Despite losing her eyesight in 1998 to macular degeneration, Janice continued to knit and crochet beautiful blankets and sweaters. She also participated in a 12-week program at the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, MA where she learned to use a cane and positively utilize her remaining sight to the best of her ability. After graduation from the program, Janice was asked by the Carroll Center Board to speak on their behalf to the Massachusetts State Legislature to encourage on-going funding for the Center. The Carroll Center gave Janice the courage and confidence to continue to participate in and enjoy life. Our family is eternally grateful.

Janice was a poised and stylish woman possessing a wonderful sense of humor. She was gracious, generous and kind; always quick to smile, and quicker still to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. And unbeknownst to all but those who knew her best, Janice also maintained an uncanny accuracy at weather prediction and always knew when it was going to snow, always!

Janice’s love for her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her friends, and her pets will never be forgotten. Putting family first was her mission, and she adored being a grandmother. She will be missed by many.

The family will have a private burial at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon, MA. A Celebration of Life will be held in early 2018.

Alzheimer’s is a tragic disease; it is the ultimate identity thief that slowly robs our loved ones from us. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011. If you cannot make a monetary donation, please consider visiting someone in a nursing home. Visiting someone takes very little time and effort, and our family’s experience made clear how many residents simply have no visitors. By visiting a local nursing home, you will give and gain joy. For at a nursing home, there will always be someone grateful just to hold your hand, to listen while you read, or to just sit by quietly comforted by your presence.
