Joanne Ciccolini Skinner, born in Leominster, MA on May 24, 1938, died of natural causes on April 29, 2024, in Lancaster, MA. She was 85.
Joanne was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother, who was never happier than when she was spending time with her family, especially her grandsons. At the birth of her first grandson, Louis, she took the moniker Nonni, in honor of her mother-in-law, Lucy Ciccolini (d. 2002), whose example of unconditional love and generosity she followed.
Joanne’s independent streak revealed itself early on when, as a child, she refused to be called by her given name, Joan, and insisted on being called Joanne; the name by which family and friends have known her ever since. Joanne loved to travel and read. She was always looking for opportunities to broaden her world and her mind. Her desire for knowledge and intellectual challenge led her to Harvard University, where, in her 40s, she completed her associate degree in extension studies. Her career trajectory took her from being a secretary for the U.S. army, to assistant to the editor of the Palm Beach Post, to head case worker for Congressman Fr. Robert Drinan, in which role she navigated myriad and complex social issues and strived to improve the lives of his constituents.
Joanne was blessed in having two great loves in her life. Her first husband Louis (Champ) Ciccolini (d. 1970), and Bernard Bergman, her husband and partner for more than 40 years. She is survived by a large and loving blended family: her daughter, Barbara Ciccolini; son and daughter-in-law Louis Rocco Ciccolini Jr. and Amanda Ciccolini; stepchildren Sydney Walsh, David Bergman, Jonah Bergman and Beth Nakamura, and grandchildren Louis Rocco Ciccolini III, Luca Ciccolini, Aklra Nakamura and Mikio Nakamura.
Wherever she went, and whatever she was doing, Joanne's heart was always with her family. She will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered.
“When we die,” asked Rabbit, “where do we go?” “Into the hearts of those who have loved us most.” said Bear. “That way we’re together forever.” -The Velveteen Rabbit
