John Gregory Payne, affectionately known as Jack to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026 in Sterling, MA, at the age of 89. Born on April 4, 1936, in Providence RI, and moved to Wellesley, MA shortly thereafter. He lived most of his adult life in Framingham, MA before moving to Leominster five years ago.
Jack graduated from Wellesley High School in 1964, and continued to be involved in the class reunion committee. After graduation, he served in the Army based in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was an avid bowler, and was president of his bowling league for many years.
Jack owned Jack Payne Florist on Linden Street in Wellesley for 40 years. He was known for his beautiful funeral arrangements and his generosity toward the Wellesley community.
Jack’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye. His son, Doug, daughter Estee Ramirez, her husband Joe Ramirez, and daughter Kelly Lewis. Jack’s role as a grandfather to Noah and Aidan Ramirez and Richard Lewis brought him immense joy and pride. Jack is predeceased by his brother, William T. Payne, Jr. He will be missed by his grand-dog Auggie whom he shared a special bond.
Jack’s life was characterized by his unwavering kindness, generosity and friendly demeanor. Traits that endeared him to everyone he met.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
