John Hanley Obituary

LUNENBURG --- John R. Hanley, 67, died suddenly Monday, October 21, 2019 at HealthAlliance Hospital, Leominster, MA with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Nancy M. (Hines) Hanley and sons Peter and Daniel, all of Lunenburg; sisters Kathleen M. McGuigan and husband James of Lunenburg and Margaret Hanley of Leominster, brother Daniel Hanley and wife Denise of Lunenburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Known to his friends and family as “Doog,” he was born in Leominster in 1952 to Ralph J. and Mary E. (O’Toole) Hanley. He graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in 1970 where he played football and baseball. Doog often said he “attended many colleges but graduated from none.” In 1972 he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a radar technician on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington and destroyer USS Theodore E. Chandler during the Viet Nam war. He worked for many years in the high tech industry, most recently at Raytheon and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Doog loved spending time with his family and friends and was never happier than when he was at the grill cooking up mountains of meat. He loved Christmas and usually started playing Christmas music in September. He loved his Irish heritage, the ocean, and being a dad. He often traveled for work and was proud to have visited 49 of the 50 states.
