John F. Tuunanen “Tuna”, aged 82, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on March 25, 1943, in Fitchburg, John's life was one marked by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
John's journey began as the beloved son of the late Toivo and Frances (Yeaman) Tuunanen, and he grew up to meet and marry the love of his life, Sandra Tuunanen (Huot), with whom he shared a beautiful marriage of 37 years. He was a devoted father to his sons, Richard Tuunanen of Townsend, Marc Tuunanen of Myrtle Beach, and Robert Tuunanen and his wife Paulette of Myrtle Beach and their mother Betty (Meserve) Sherman. His wisdom, patience, and loving nature also extended to his nephew, Nathan and his mother Yvonne Tuunanen.
John's legacy continued to flourish through his grandchildren, Guinevere and Austin Tuunanen of Myrtle Beach, Calvin Tuunanen of Olympia, WA, and Cerridwen Tuunanen, as well as his cherished great-grandchild, Bjorn Tuunanen. Each of them was a testament to his nurturing spirit and will carry forward his lessons of love and kindness.
For many years, John dedicated his skills as a machinist at Simonds Saw & Steel, where he was not only respected for his workmanship but also for his camaraderie and reliability. His colleagues knew him as a man who was always willing to lend a hand and share a laugh.
John's passion for community was evident in his active participation at the Eastwood Club Fitchburg and the Lakeview Club. He was not only a founding member but a friend to many, leaving behind numerous friends who will miss his presence dearly. His involvement in these clubs was not just a pastime, but a reflection of his commitment to staying connected with his community and forging lasting relationships.
He had a knack for fixing things, a warm embrace for those he loved, and a heart that seemed to have no bounds. His kindness was a beacon that guided his actions and touched the lives of many.
Predeceased by his brothers, Michael Tuunanen and Thomas Tuunanen. John's memory will be cherished and kept alive by those who survive him. His was a life well-lived, filled with moments of joy, shared experiences, and an abundance of love.
John F. Tuunanen will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Special thanks to wonderful friends Ann Bosselait & Frank Labowicz.
