Joseph Hickey Obituary

Joseph Bernard Hickey, affectionately known as Joe to his friends and family, lived a life that was as impactful as it was inspiring. Born on April 22nd, 1941, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Joe was a beacon of light and wisdom in the lives of everyone he touched. On July 13th, 2025, in Leominster, Massachusetts, surrounded by the love of his family, Joe passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, education, and community.

Joe was the beloved husband of Judy Parent Hickey, and the proud father of Dean Hickey, Kelly Marciano, and BethAnn Couture. His role as a grandfather to Nicholas, Sadie, Shannon, Liam, Conor, and Alex, and as a great-grandfather to Harper, Cooper, and Ava, was one of his greatest joys. His unconditional love and guidance shaped their lives profoundly.  He was predeceased by his parents Patrick & Nancy Hickey, his brother Peter Hickey and son Jason Hickey.

A graduate of Saint Bernard's High School and Fitchburg State College, Joe dedicated his career to nurturing young minds as a Special Education Teacher at Ayer High School for 35 years. His passion for sports led him to serve as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Ayer High School and later as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Leominster High School. He also served as Offensive Coordinator for Leominster and Matignon High Schools. His coaching journey culminated as the Head Football Coach at his alma mater, Saint Bernard's High School. His dedication to excellence was recognized with his induction into the Hall of Fame of Ayer High School, Leominster High School, and Saint Bernard's High School – a testament to his remarkable career.

Joe's Catholic faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and decisions with compassion and integrity. His interests in golfing, fishing, and playing pool were more than hobbies; they were avenues through which he connected with people, sharing laughter and wisdom in equal measure. The words that best describe Joe are intelligent, gentle, and passionate. He was curious about history, and extremely well-read. His gentle nature made him a confidant and friend to many, and his passion for his work and hobbies was infectious. Joe loved what he did, and it showed in every aspect of his life, from his family to his career, to his pastimes.

Joe's story is not one of an end, but a continuing legacy through the lives of those he taught, coached, and loved. His memory will serve as an inspiration to all to live with purpose, to lead with heart, and to cherish every moment with those we hold dear. Though he has left the physical world, the lessons he imparted and the love he shared will continue to resonate for generations to come. Joseph Bernard Hickey: a remarkable man, a life well-lived, and a legacy that will endure.

The Man In the Glass - Joe's favorite quote....

"When you get what you want in your struggle for self and the world makes you a king for the day, just go to the mirror and look at yourself and see what the man has to say,

For it isn't your father or mother or wife whose judgement upon you must pass,

the fellow whose verdict counts most in your life is the one staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum and think you are a wonderful guy but the man in the glass says you're only a bum if you can't look him straight in the eye.

He's the fellow to please- never mind all the rest, for he's with you clear to the end,

and you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test if the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years and get pats on the back as you pass, but your final reward will be heartache and tears if you've cheated the man in the glass."
