Margaret E. (Toolin) Halnan, 94, of Leominster, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in her home on Friday, May 12. Margaret was born August 22, 1928, in Leominster, daughter of the late B. John Toolin and Agnes (Landers) Toolin Shannon.
She attended St. Leo’s Elementary School, Leominster High School and Becker Jr. College. She and her late husband, Retired Army Sergeant John R. Halnan, lived their early married years in Austria, Taiwan and Bangor, ME before resettling in Leominster in 1969. She continued to enjoy traveling over the years.
Margaret began her career at Selig Manufacturing as head bookkeeper followed by a position in payroll at Ft. Devens. From there, she worked in tax payer services at the IRS and retired in 1993 as an IRS Agent.
She cherished her lifetime association as an active member of St. Leo’s Parish where she also helped count the weekly collections. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, several bowling leagues, an investment club, knitting group and the Leominster Senior Center where she especially enjoyed playing cribbage and taking exercise classes. She also volunteered at the voting polls and was active at the Fitchburg State fitness center.
She was a devoted and loving mother. She leaves her two sons, John Halnan, of Maynard, and Thomas Halnan, of Fitchburg, daughter, Ann Sola and husband Tony of Natick, granddaughter Emily Sola, and three nephews. There was nothing more important to her than her family.
She was predeceased by her husband, John R. Halnan and her brother, Francis Toolin.
Calling hours are Wednesday, May 17, from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. at Richardson Funeral Home, 106 West St., Leominster. The funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 A.M. at St. Leo’s Church, 128 Main St., Leominster. Burial will follow in St. Leo’s Cemetery.
