Markos Zaranis Obituary

Markos Zaranis, a man whose legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those he touched, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2024, in Fitchburg, MA, after a graceful battle with dementia. Born on December 6, 1930, in the island of Amorgos, Greece, Markos embodied the spirit of his homeland- resilient, vibrant, and brimming with life.

He was the cherished son of the late Ioannis and Sofia Zaranis and the devoted husband to the late Kaliopi Zaranis, with whom he shared a love that was a guiding beacon to all who knew them. Markos was a loving father to his children, Sophia and John Zaranis, and daughter-in-law Lourdes Zaranis. His lineage includes his adored grandchildren, Evagelia Cuadrado, Kaliopi Amanatidis, along with her husband Haralambos Amanatidis, Markos Zaranis, and Sofia Zaranis. He also found joy in the exuberance of his great-grandchildren, Dimitreus Johnston, Carteair Cuadrado, Marianna Cuadrado, Pavlos Amanatidis, Georgia Amanatidis, and his great-great-grandchildren, Josiah Malave, Dior Johnston, and Evalisa Johnston.

Markos served with honor in the Greek Navy from 1953 to 1955, carrying with him the discipline and camaraderie that would hallmark his life. His skilled hands and keen eye for detail led him to become a master tailor, eventually co-founding the successful Lukas & Markos Cleaners in New York City. His work was not just a means to an end, but a canvas on which he painted his dedication to craft and community.

A man of many passions, Markos was an avid photographer, capturing the essence of life through the lens of his camera and the frames of his 8mm movie camera. His films were more than mere recordings; they were the narrative of his family's history, shared during heartfelt gatherings that brought laughter and nostalgia in equal measure. Markos also found solace in the tranquility of fishing, the thrill of wrestling matches at Madison Square Garden, and the simple joys of exploring the Botanical Gardens, beaches, and the Bronx Zoo. His favorite moments were spent creating memories with his beloved granddaughters, Evagelia and Kaliopi, during their cherished outings.

Those who knew Markos would describe him as loving, generous, and wise—a man who gave without expecting anything in return and whose wisdom was a guiding light. His life was a testament to the belief that the richest person is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least.

As we remember Markos, let us be inspired by the words of the great poet Rumi: "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do." Markos lived by this credo, pouring his love into his family, his work, and his hobbies, creating beauty and joy at every turn.

Today, we celebrate a man that lived his life to the fullest. Markos Zaranis may have set sail on his final voyage, but his spirit remains close to us all, guiding us towards horizons filled with love, laughter, and the courage to pursue our passions. Let us honor his memory by living with the same fervor and generosity that he exemplified, knowing that the essence of Markos will forever be woven into the fabric of our lives.

Farewell, Markos, until we meet again under the endless skies of Amorgos, where the sea meets the sun in an eternal embrace. Your journey continues in the stories we shared, the values you instilled, and the love that endures. Your life was a masterful tapestry, rich in color and warmth, a true masterpiece to behold.
