Michael Jonathan Schubmehl
October 2, 1974 – October 6, 2025
Michael Schubmehl was born on October 2, 1974 in Woburn, MA, the son of Thomas J. Schubmehl and Elizabeth J. (Fadel), both of Niagara Falls, NY.
Mike grew up around the Air Force, spending his formative years living at Eglin AFB, FL and predominantly at Hanscom AFB, MA where his father retired from Active Duty. Mike studied print design at Minuteman Technical High School and worked his trade into a position printing for the New England Journal of Medicine to fund his attendance at Fitchburg State. With his long-time family ties to the Air Force, Mike chose to return to Hanscom AFB to build his career supporting the 66th Air Base Group, a service unit under Air Force Materiel Command. Mike worked Roads and Grounds and Heavy Equipment Operations on the base that he knew every detail of, like the back of his hand. Mike furthered his contributions to the base taking on a role of Contract Services Lead in 2012 where he was responsible for managing contracts that serviced the infrastructure supporting the military and civilian workforce and critical Air Force missions at Hanscom and throughout New England and New York. Mike was an active member of the Federal Civil Service until his passing.
Those who know Mike know him best for his humor, his warmth, his deeply caring heart and tendency to put others before himself. He loved to cook, was an enthusiastic student of nature, trees, fungi, and always came out with the most random facts. Mike had a love and appreciation for music and he loved to fish, particularly for bass at Sunset Lake in Ashburnham, MA, where he lived. But there was no love that Mike had more than for his wife, Erin and his two beautiful daughters, Katelyn and Colleen.
Mike met Erin while attending college in Fitchburg, MA, they were each other’s closest of so many friends they continued to hold close for over 30 years. Mike and Erin celebrated 25 years of marriage earlier this year. Their daughters, Katelyn and Colleen are both full time college students in Massachusetts, Katelyn in her Senior year at UMass Boston, and Colleen a Junior at Bentley University in Waltham. Mike was a dedicated husband and a father that would do anything for his girls. Mike was always in their corner, coaching ball hockey, picking up the rules of field hockey, open about any new activity they wanted to try. Mike never missed a chance to cheer them on.
Mike was a member Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, a brotherhood he held close. He was also a member of Bass Point where he thoroughly enjoyed the comradery as well as the quality time, great meals, and playing cards with his friends.
Mike is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his siblings Marc, Josh, Tom, and Beth, loved by his aunts, uncles, Erin’s family, their nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and their little dog, Tempe, all who will miss Mike dearly.
Mike left this world peacefully on October 6, 2025 following an intense, strongly fought battle with pancreatic cancer over the course of 6 months. Mike, Erin and their girls spent their time living, loving and embracing their time together, making the most of each day. Throughout that time Mike was a source of inspiration to all who knew him, a true example of strength, dignity and acceptance while he fought and rallied every single day to the end.
Fare you well, Fare you well, I love you more than words can tell…rest in peace Mike, you and your memory live actively in our hearts forever.
Friends and family are welcomed to celebrate the life of Mike, alongside one another, on a day of remembrance, Saturday, October 18, 2025.
Calling Hours will be held from 11 am – 1 pm at Richardson Funeral Home, with a brief Memorial Service at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, Mike’s family suggests donations be made in support of cancer research, the National Forest Foundation, or VNA hospice services, to fund facilities such as Rose Monahan Hospice Home, where Mike received care in his last days.
