Michael Smith Obituary

Michael James Smith "Smitty", 70, known as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2025, surrounded by family at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 26, 1954, in the same loving community where he would spend his entire life, Mike's radiant spirit and infectious laughter left a lasting imprint on all who knew him. Mike was the cherished partner of Joyce Gulliver, the love of his life, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond and countless adventures. He was the proud father of Jillian Vadiz and an admired father-in-law to Justo Vadiz. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Jayden, Janelli, and Jianna Vadiz, who were the light of his life. Mike was the treasured son of Bernice Smith and the late Raymond Smith, a devoted brother to Paul Smith and Tina Smith Barassi, and a fun-loving uncle to Mario and Sofia Barassi.

A true Leominster native through and through, Mike graduated from St. Bernard's High School in 1972 as Class President, leaving behind fond memories etched in the hearts of his classmates. He furthered his education at Mount Wachusett Community College, earning an Associate's Degree. Mike tended bar at both The Tankard and St. Jean's Club, and was a passionate cook at Jack August. He concluded his professional journey with Genrad, where he started as a custodian and worked his way through Finance and ended as a Customer Care Specialist where he retired in 2002, after many years of dedicated service.

Mike’s love of music and extensive knowledge made him a force to be reckon with. Mike never lost his zeal for community service. His dream was to become a Leominster Fighter Fighter, even passing the exam, but his vision prevented that. He did however, spend many decades at the fire stations of Leominster where he was embraced by that brotherhood, and maintained lifelong friendships. He was also very active with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, working the yearly MDA Boot Drive in downtown Leominster. In 2009, he joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Leominster Aerie #477, embracing their motto, "People Helping People." There, he was a beloved figure, especially on Friday nights, when he would cook up the best Fish Frys the town had ever tasted. Mike was an officer for many years and currently held the position of Mass State Worthy President. Mike's generosity and commitment to fundraising for the Eagles' numerous charities were matched only by his passion for cooking and bringing people together. For those who knew him well, Mike's generous spirit, witty sense of humor, and kind-hearted nature defined him. He cherished his travels, especially his trips to Maine with his family and attending F.O.E. conventions throughout the country with Joyce. These trips were not only vacations, they were adventures with lifelong friends and opportunities for Mike to spread his passion of "Eagledom", to new brothers and sisters from all parts of the Country.

Mike's humor will echo in the memories of those who loved him, his stories will be retold with smiles, and his legacy of kindness will continue to inspire. A true example of faith in humanity, Mike's impact on his community and the lives he touched will never be forgotten. As we bid farewell to a life so beautifully lived, we take comfort in knowing that Mike's journey was enriched by love, friendship, and an unwavering, commitment to making a difference in the world. Though he may be gone, the warmth of his spirit will remain with us forever. As Mike would say "Thanks for the ride."

We would like to thank the Doctor’s and Nurse’s at The Dana Farber Brigham for their exceptional care over the past 2 years.
