Philip Melanson Sr. Obituary

Philip A. Melanson, known to family and friends as Phil, passed away on May 17, 2026, at UMass Medical Center, University Campus, at the age of 82.

Born on July 15, 1943, in Leominster, Massachusetts, Phil lived a life marked by devotion, quiet strength, and steadfast love for his family. He carried the values of hard work, kindness, and faith throughout his life.

Phil was a proud graduate of Leominster High School, Class of 1962. He continued his education at Lowell Technical Institute, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to work at General Electric in Fitchburg where he brought intelligence, dedication, and a strong work ethic to his career.

Outside of work, Phil found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved to play golf. He also took great comfort in his Catholic faith, which remained an important source of peace and guidance throughout his life. His faith was a steady part of who he was, and it helped shape the thoughtful way he lived each day.

Phil was predeceased by his beloved wife of 52 years, Margaret “Peggy” Melanson. Their marriage was a lasting testament to love, loyalty, and companionship, and together they built a family and a life filled with shared memories.

He is survived by his son, Philip Melanson, Jr.; his daughter, Marie Shepard, and her husband, Mike Shepard; his son, Lee Melanson, and daughter-in-law, Eliana Delgado; and his son, Chris Melanson, and wife, Sarah Melanson. He also leaves behind his grandson, Nathan Shepard, granddaughter Caitlyn Normandin and great grandson Ashton Shepard who brought him great pride and joy. He is survived by his brother, Don Melanson, and Don’s wife, Carole Melanson, as well as his sister, Dina Johnson and Charles (Chuck) Johnson.

Phil’s family was the center of his life, and he cherished each of them deeply. Though he will be deeply missed, Phil’s life stands as a beautiful example of devotion, faith, and love. His family and friends will hold him close in their hearts and remember him with gratitude for the many ways he enriched their lives.
