Richard Bergman Obituary

Richard A. (Dick) Bergman; Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa (of Lunenburg MA), passed away December 21, 2017 of natural causes, while lovingly surrounded by family members and in his beloved home on Lake Shirley!

Richard was born July 22, 1928 in Clinton, MA to Victor and Anna (Enfors) Bergman. He was a 60 year resident of Leominster, MA, until relocating to the family’s Summer home in Lunenburg for the last 28 years. Richard married Ruth Pretzer on 9-26-54 and they had a long marriage with 5 children, Ruth predeceased her husband in 2011. Richard’s family included siblings William Bergman and Carol Carchidi (both of Leominster). His children Peter (Terri Normandin), Pamela Pickett (Shaun), Barbara, David (Lisa Lyndon), and Robert (deceased in 2013). Grandchildren include Peter Jr. (Kristi), Heath (Anne), Beau, Spencer Bergman; Timothy (Leslie) and Matthew Pickett; Alexis and Natalie Bergman. Great Grandchildren are Owen, Connor, Ava and Blake Bergman.

Richard was employed at Leominster Savings Bank (Vice President/Treasurer) for 36 years. His time and military service, in the Korean War, where he served with the 2nd Armed Division during German occupancy, (Sgt First Class) was a source of pride and memories shared with family and friends in later years.

From businessman to a very social retired community member and friend to many, his later years were filled with travel, many decades of companionship with his wife Ruth, and many adventures. But all stars always pointed back to the oasis of his deck on Lake Shirley enjoying the tranquility of the small cove waters and the delight of the majestic eagle that would often give him an afternoon wave.

His family wishes to thank the amazing friends and fellowship that he enjoyed through Silver Sneakers as well as the “guys/friends” at morning coffee where the state of affairs were discussed and debated, and family updates were shared. Also special thanks to neighbor extraordinaire Scott, for your friendship and help, you added happiness to many days!

Richard was a longstanding member of Pilgrims Congregational Church in Leominster. He was also a lifelong avid reader and believed strongly in the Public Library system. He served on the board of trustee at the Leominster Library for over 28 years and never stopped reading, visiting and supporting. At his request we kindly ask that anyone wishing to honor Richard’s life, consider a donation to the Leominster Public Library, 30 West Street, Leominster, MA 01453

As happens on our earthly journeys we lovingly return you to the Lord and the circle of love from Victor and Anna, your loved Ruth and Rob.
