Richard A. Gaetz, a lifelong resident of Fitchburg, MA, and a cherished pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, at the age of 88. Richard was born the son of James and Elsie (Margaret) Gaetz, on October 31, 1935, in the same town he would dedicate his life to. Richard's story is one of unwavering commitment to his wife Linda, his family, his country, and the simple joys that life offers.
Richard's journey began in Fitchburg, where he grew up with six siblings: Margie, Audrey, Barbara, Robert and Kenny. Learning the values of hard work and community service, his early years were a prelude to a life marked by dedication and kindness. After completing his education, Richard answered the call of duty and served with honor in the United States Navy. His time in the service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and the importance of giving back, traits that would define his later years.
Upon returning to civilian life, Richard (23) married his sweetheart, Linda Jackman (18) on October 24th, 1959. They were married nearly 65 years. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and the pitter-patter of their children: Lois, Scott, Barry, Mark, and Eric. As a family man, he was the embodiment of the word 'selfless', always putting the needs of his loved ones, especially his beloved wife, above his own.
Richard worked as a dedicated papermaker for Weyerhaeuser and James River Corp. his entire career. He performed his job with pride. He was respected by his co-workers for his work ethic and friendly demeanor making him not just a co-worker but a true friend to many. He retired in 1998.
Richard loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting as hobbies but most of all loved camping with his family and later in life was an avid gardener. He found much joy spending time outdoors in his garden tending his tomato plants, vegetables and flowers for his wife. His home was his castle, and when he wasn’t in his garden, he could be found in his workshop immersed in various home improvement projects, showcasing his handy skills and creative spirit.
Those who knew Richard will remember him for his friendly smile, his ability to fix almost anything, and his generous, selfless nature. He was the kind of man who would drop everything to help a neighbor in need or to spend time with his wife and family, whom he adored above all else.
Richard A. Gaetz leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and the enduring impact of a life well-lived. As he reunites with loved ones who have gone before him, he will be deeply missed by his wife, Linda, his children, Lois, Scott, Barry, Mark, and Eric, his grandchildren, Alec, Ryan, Braelyn, Jenny, Ashton, and Katie, and by the many lives he touched with his warm presence.
Richard loved life. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Richard A. Gaetz was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire and guide us in the years to come.
