ROBERT EDWARD SMITH
LUNENBURG—Robert Edward Smith, 91, died peacefully February 18, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 22, 1924 in Midland Park, NJ, son of John E. and Nell (Reinstra) Smith. He had a wonderful 61-year marriage to his beloved Martha (Clark) Smith. He was devoted to his children, Karen Nell Smith (Andy) of Lunenburg, MA, Alice Ann Smith Mahoney (Bob) (both of whom predeceased Bob), Amy Smith Perkins (Bob) of Asbury, NJ, Nathan John Smith (Janis) of Columbia, NJ, grandchildren, Bob (Allison), Carolyn (Caanen), Emily (Leif), Hannah, Lowell, Jacob, Mattie, Connie, Peter, and great-grandson, Caelin. Bob also leaves cherished sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Bob was a World War II veteran, who served in the Army Corp of Engineers in Hawaii. He received an engineering degree from NJIT graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and a law degree from NYU. He had a distinguished career in the Patent Department of Singer Sewing Company, traveling widely as the company grew and sewing technology evolved over 40 years.
After marrying, Bob put down roots in Cranford, NJ, Warren, NJ, Danby, VT, and Lunenburg, MA. He was a life-long church member and active at Cranford UMC, Union Village UMC, Tinmouth Community Church, and the Congregational Church of Christ.
Bob had many talents and interests. He could build anything--a house, boats, furniture. An accomplished violinist in the NJ Suburban Symphony Orchestra, he played a mean harmonica, wrote comic plays, was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, and made unforgettable dandelion wine. A creative, kind and generous Dutchman, Bob always had a smile and a joke, was quick to offer a helping hand and a warm welcome. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, positive nature, abundant energy, and steadfast love.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Congregational Church of Christ, 583 Main Street, Leominster, MA 01453.
