Roland Leger Obituary

Roland R. Leger of Leominster, formerly of Fitchburg, passed away on Memorial Day, May 29, at UMass Memorial Medical Center with his family beside him. He was 96 years young. His family’s words follow.

Our Dad made his final loop around the Brooks Pond neighborhood with his red ‘wheels’, so enjoying being outdoors and talking with all his friends along the way. Through every challenge he faced, every illness and injury, he’d recover, pick himself up and say, ‘Life Is Good’! He felt extraordinarily lucky to have his family and friends to enjoy for so long during his life. He had an engineer’s mind, a loving heart, a great sense of humor, a youthful zest for life and a bit of French sarcasm.

Dad was proud to have served his country in the Army Air Forces in WWII, serving in Germany. He subsequently received a degree in mechanical engineering and had a long and distinguished career at General Electric in Fitchburg. He married his high school sweetheart, Yvonne Roy, and together they had two children and a very loving family. Dad was always a calming presence for us and so caring to Mom during her later years. Throughout his life he brought us humor, support and love for our expanding family and great enthusiasm for all the births, weddings and graduations through his 96 years. We are grateful for all of you who have been such a special part of his life and know that he loved you all.

He is survived by his daughter Carol and son-in-law John Dunne, grandson BJ and his wife Megan and great grandson Ford Dunne of Pennsylvania, grandson Matt and his wife Brandi Dunne of California and granddaughter Kaela Dunne of Washington D.C.

He is also survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Patricia Leger and her children Vanessa and Isabella Goddard.

He is predeceased by his wife Yvonne (Roy) Leger, his sister-in-law Leona (Roy) Shayer, his brothers, Alfred, Hennessey, Edmond and Robert Leger, sister Rita (Leger) Collette along with his nephew Bob Leger and his niece Nancy (Shayer) Ensenat.

He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Bea Leger and many cherished nieces and nephews, lifelong family friends and neighbors.

We especially want to thank the entire Lakeside 2 Neurotrauma ICU team at UMass for their loving compassion and care for our Dad during his final days.
