Roy McLaughlin Obituary

Roy Richard McLaughlin, age 90 of Avon, Connecticut (formerly Leominster, MA) passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, from a long battle with cancer.  He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years – Hisako – who passed on July 10, 2021.

Roy was born in Leominster, MA on October 14, 1930.  He is survived by his daughter, Midori Liucci and son-in-law, Andy Liucci of Canton, CT and his beloved granddaughter, Nikki Liucci of Johns Island, SC.

Roy was well known for his dry sense of humor and his passion for telling jokes and stories.  He loved poetry since he was a child and could recite poetry from memory until recently.  In his earlier years, he was an avid golfer, bridge and poker player, and bowler.  During retirement, Roy loved to watch Hallmark holiday movies and read romance novels.

After graduating from Leominster High School, Roy served in the U.S. Air Force and received an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant.  He then joined the Foreign Service division of the U.S. State Department where he served 35 years overseas as a Communications Officer.  He served in various posts – West Germany, Italy, Afghanistan, Malawi, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Nigeria and China.
